Our Story

As a Sri Lankan/American I’ve had to learn how to make the unique and delicious cuisine of my homeland myself, since there aren’t too many Sri Lankan restaurants out there. This food is soooo good that I want to share it with the world.

-Owner, S.H. Fernando Jr.

I am a writer, musician and filmmaker, who happens to have a passion for food—especially all things spicy. I have always been into food and love to cook, but because my other pursuits take up most of my time, this is one interest that has definitely been on the "backburner."

Well, the publishing industry is in disarray now, the music industry took a dive years ago, and raising money for independent films is not easy even in a good economy. So, in 2006 I "dropped out" so-to-speak, and went back to my homeland of Sri Lanka to really learn the cuisine inside and out so I could make all the great food I grew up with. By the time I left the island after that year, I had eaten at practically every restaurant in Colombo and cooked everyday for several hours, consulting with chefs as well as my friends and family. Armed with this knowledge, I wrote a cookbook called: Rice & Curry: Sri Lankan Home Cooking.

I don't watch much TV, but I am a big fan of a food/travel show called No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain. I knew Bourdain had never been to Sri Lanka, so I got in contact with him, sent him a copy of my book, and told him that if he was ever planning a trip to Sri Lanka, that I was his man. Two months later, I got a call from the show saying that the trip was on. The fact that I got to be on camera with Bourdain, introducing him to the cuisine of my homeland was a choice gig to say the least. This past December we traveled to Sri Lanka and shot the show, which aired in March 2009 for the first time.

Incidentally, Sri Lankan food, collectively known as "rice and curry," encompasses such a broad array of flavors, and it is really very different from Indian food, to which it is always compared. My curry powder is made, based on a family recipe I got from Leela, my family's cook for the last 45 years. So there you have it—straight from my kitchen to yours.
